An Ignition Interlock Device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your car as part of a DUI conviction. This is costly, inconvenient, and embarrassing if you have any passengers; therefore, you need to contact a skilled attorney at our firm before you do anything else if you have been charged with a DUI. Our experienced San Francisco DUI attorney can do everything in their power to win your case or get your penalties reduced.

How does the IID work?

When a judge orders you to install an IID, you must pay for the costs of installation at an authorized location. The device requires you to give a breath sample before you can start your car; if it detects alcohol, it will not allow the car to be started. Additionally, it will require samples to be given right after the start of driving and at about 45-minute intervals as you go. Failures to pass the test while driving are logged by the device, but the car is not shut down. The device is fairly failsafe as it also detects any efforts to tamper with it.

The installation of an IID is generally dependent on prior convictions; however, the judge can order it if he or she feels it is appropriate. Several counties require it for first-time convictions. This is obviously something you do not want to have to deal with—therefore, if you have been charged with a DUI, the best thing to do is to contact Okabe & Haushalter before you do anything else.
